Officially welcome first year students to the Shaw University, celebrating the official start of the Fall semester at Shaw University. The President will give her official charge to the freshmen class. Fall Convocation is the first formal gathering of the academic year.

Guest Speaker:

Marchell Adams-David – City Manager, Raleigh, NC

Marchell Adams-David is a native of Richmond County.  A 1988 graduate of Richmond Senior High School, Marchell attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergraduate and graduate studies.  She began her local government career in 1993 with the City of Hamlet where she served for 20 ½  years – the last 13 years as city manager.  Marchell became the assistant city manager for the City of Raleigh in 2014 and now serves as the City Manager of the City of Raleigh.  She is the first female and the first African- American to serve in that capacity in North Carolina’s capital city.

A true public servant, Marchell has committed her life to public service for the past 28 years. She is active in many community organizations – the Alexander YMCA Board of Directors, YouThrive Board of Directors, Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross, N. C. Water Pollution Control System Operator’s Certification Commission, Local Govt. Federal Credit Union Advisory Council, Project REACH, Triangle J Council of Govts. UNC Board of Visitors, and the Hillsborough Street Community Services Corporation just to name a few.  She attends church at The Fountain of Raleigh and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Awards: 2014 NAACP Humanitarian of the Year Award & 2018 NC Assistant City Manager of the Year
